They call this security?

Bruce Schneier linked to this disturbing story about a man who was detained then arrested in London because he exhibited "suspicious behaviour":

  • he used his mobile phone on the subway
  • he didn't look at police officers standing near the station entrance
  • he retrieved a printed document from his backpack and read it
  • when searched, his backpack contained a laptop computer.

This kind of stupidity makes me really angry. Surely the initial search would have shown that this passenger poses no danger as a terrorist. Possessing computer equipment is not a crime and should not be reasonable grounds for arrest.
