MG Siegler had an interesting exchange with Google Chrome developer Peter Kasting in response to the news that Google has renewed its deal with Mozilla to be the default search provider for Firefox:
Bigger picture, if Google and Mozilla are such partners, why did Google have to renew their deal at 3x the rate of the previous deal? And why was Mozilla talking to Microsoft and Yahoo at all?
Because money, not the open web, makes the world go round.
The deal is worth a staggering $300 million per year to Mozilla for the next three years, up from $100 million in 2010.
