Naming conventions

I never really noticed it before, but Microsoft has a habit of naming their technologies with the generic name for that technology. The first one I thought of was FAT (their filesystem standard, short for File Allocation Table which is also a generic term). Other examples of a similar tactic: SQL server, Media Player, Windows.

Obviously these are the type of names that consumers remember, and usually exclude the possibility of another name gaining mindshare. "You're talking about a media player? You mean Windows Media Player, right?"

Okay, maybe they don't call SQL server a "database server", but they had to include at least one buzzword...
